I, like so many throughout the country and indeed the world, stood in shock upon learning of the passing of Tim Russert last Friday afternoon. There I was sitting in a barbershop waiting for my son Justin to get his haircut, when a friend called to inform me of the sad and perplexing news. And how ironic it was indeed that I was with my son upon learning of his passing, and that the friend who told me constantly asks me about how ‘Lil JJ’ is doing.
I say this because Tim Russert despite his wealth, fame, fortune and prestige, appeared to view fatherhood as his number one job and most important priority. His best seller in 2004 “Big Russ & Me” made this very clear. In the book, we learn about the lessons imparted by his father, a proud and patriotic WWII veteran. We also learn that Tim was an ordinary guy whose attentiveness to his fathers’ lessons allowed him to live an extraordinary life. No magic: just good old fashion hard work.
